Plow Boy Bend is the bend in the Missouri River between Lupus and Coopers Landing, a great place for musicians to play. The front porch is but a few yards from the river flowing by. The sunsets are exquisite, night after night. Pippa began playing there in 2005, picking and singing.
Along came Mike Cooper's brother-in-law, Dave Dearnley, with a very nice guitar and some mighty fine flat-picking, so he joined in, and then there were two. And lots of audience appreciation, well trained in the giving of tips.
Sometimes we played with Patty Nash on dobro and Jeff Wheeler on djembe (African talking drum). And a good time was had by all. In October 2005 along comes Bill Jensen, mandolin picker extraordinaire! So then we were three full-time bluegrassers, one djembe player to keep us on time, and Patty on dobro when she's in town.
So Cooper thought it'd be good for business to have a Saturday afternoon jam session, during the slow months of the winter, and there we were jamming away and along comes Fred Vultee with a banjo, wanting to get back into serious bluegrass tunes. And then SIR Mark Atkins Lieberman, excellent wonderful all-round amazing PROFESSIONAL musician of ultimate quality, who plays guitar, mandolin, electric bass (check out the band Planet Jazz) and he is wanting to brush up his chops on the upright bass. So that was PLOW BOY BEND BLUEGRASS BAND. It was a fun band.
Now folks have gone their separate ways. Bill moved to Kansas of all places; Dave's playing with DAVE & DYNO; Mark plays performs around town, solo, or with Planet Jazz, or with Val and Mal; Jeff's still playing the djembe but more often in St. Louis than here; Pat's still playing dobro.
